The Spartan Special is a publication to celebrate our Spartans and community. You can't hide our Spartan pride! The Spartan Special will be published again on Thursday, April 5, 2018.

School will not be in session Monday, March 26, 2018 through Friday, March 30, 2018 due to Spring Break. Classes will reconvene on Monday, April 2, 2018. Please feel free to share your pictures from your Spring Break with us by emailing Mrs. Chase, lchase@swshelby.k12.in.us. You may just see them in the next edition of The Spartan Special! SWHS Dinner and A Show = Success!

Southwestern High School's Dinner and a Show was a huge success Friday evening. Thank you to the students, parents, and community members who helped make this evening possible. To our wonderful, large audience, thank you for supporting arts education in our schools!

2018-2019 Kindergarten Registration Rescheduled

With inclement weather causing school to be cancelled on Wednesday, March 21, 2018, kindergarten registration has been rescheduled for Tuesday, April 3, 2018 from 4:00 - 6:00 PM. Can't make it during this time? Don't worry! Contact Southwestern Elementary School's office, (317) 729 - 5320, for more information.

4th Graders' Field Trip Fun

Southwestern Elementary School's 4th grade students explored Indiana's past, present, and future on their field trip to the Indiana Historical Society and State Museum this week.

Sign Up for the Annual SWE Talent Show!

Dust off your magic hat, tune up your instruments, warm up your voices and get your dance shoes ready - It's time to start practicing for our annual SWE Talent Show! This year the show will be featured on the indoor stage during the upcoming SPARNIVAL (aka the SWE PTO Spring Carnival ☺) on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at SWE.

Sign up your elementary-age appropriate acts under five minutes today as only the first twenty-five acts will be accepted! To participate, please sign up in the office and return a completed participation form and permission slip to your classroom teacher as soon as possible but no later than April 6, 2018.

Spartan Staff Spotlight

Ms. Cara Bentham: SWE Special Education Teacher

Ms. Cara Bentham joined Spartan Nation in the fall as our K-6 Special Education teacher. Ms. Bentham is a 1992 graduate of Brocton Central School in Brocton, NY. She obtained a Bachelor's of Science in General Education K-8 and Special Education K-12 from Grand Canyon University. In December, Ms. Bentham finished her first Master's Degree in ABA at Ball State University. Ms. Bentham has three children: Kayla (CA), Bryce (IN), and Ty (NY). Her proudest moment as a Spartan is watching her students accomplish something they thought would be too difficult for them. Thank you, Ms. Bentham, for all that you do for our Spartans!

Mrs. Emily Haugh: SWE Essential Skills Teacher

Mrs. Haugh joined Spartan Nation in 2015 as the Essential Skills Teacher. During her time at Southwestern Elementary School, Mrs. Haugh has coordinated the Gleaners Back Sack Program, co-sponsored of the elementary's Spell Bowl team, and taught the morning session of the Little Spartan Preschool program. Mrs. Haugh graduated from Cincinnati Christian High School in 2009. She furthered her education at Northern Kentucky University and earned a degree in Elementary and Special Education. She married her husband, Jon, in 2015, bringing her to Indiana. Mrs. Haugh's proudest moment as a Spartan is watching her students meet their goals, grow in their own unique ways, and succeed in the general education setting. Mrs. Haugh's students continue to surprise her and make her proud everyday! Thank you, Mrs. Haugh, for all that you do for our Spartans!

Mr. John Werbe: SWHS Special Education Teacher

Mr. John Werbe joined Spartan Nation in 2017 as a Special Education teacher at Southwestern Jr./Sr. High School. Mr. Werbe graduated from Shelbyville High School in 2008. He furthered his education at Franklin College and earned a bachelor's degree in Economics and is currently working towards his master's degree in Special Education. In 2015, he married his wife, Haley, who is a registered nurse in Indianapolis. Mr. Werbe's proudest moment as a Spartan is watching his students overcome their challenges and still succeed in and out of the classroom. It's hard to hide his Spartan Pride! Thank you, Mr. Werbe, for all that you do for our Spartans!

Southwestern Elementary School's C.A.R.E. Club

When inclement weather effects school hours, Southwestern Elementary School's C.A.R.E. Club will continue to be opened with alternative hours. In case of a 2 hour delay, C.A.R.E. Club will be opened in the morning beginning at 8:00 AM until school begins for students currently enrolled. Southwestern Elementary School's C.A.R.E. Club has open enrollment for all students currently enrolled in Southwestern Elementary School. Please click on the link below if you are interested in enrolling your student(s) in C.A.R.E. If you would like to have your positive story shared with the Spartan Nation, please send the details to Mrs. Lindsay Chase, Curriculum and Communications Director. We would love to share your positive stories that include personal achievements of your child such as serving as a volunteer in a non-profit organization, earning awards or recognition in 4-H, earning badges in Girl Scouts, etc, and etc. You may just see your story in a future edition of "The Spartan Special" or in The Shelbyville News!
